Tip of the Day: Detox - Part II

To those of you who read my first post on detox (it's HERE), this is a continuation of that post. Here are some of Mom's own advice on detox - the way they do it way back then. I'll try to adapt it to the hectic lifestyle most of us lead today.

First, why detoxify? Being able to cleanse ourselves from toxins that enter our body is crucial to looking and feeling younger and healthy. There are many things that enter our body daily - the ladies, for example - eat as much as 12 lipsticks a year through eating (with the lipstick on, that is). This is why regular detox is important.

Here's some suggestions on detox at home, starting from Friday evening to Sunday (when you're not working). Remember, it's good to start at home, since there are side effects to detox such as fatigue, lack of energy etc.

1. Start by eating less meat and carbohydrates. Proteins are okay, but meat should be avoided. If possible, drink only juice and plain water, as plain water helps to cleanse the body, and juices supply a lot of nutrients without the regular strain the body experiences in extracting nutrients from solid food.

2. Less processing will mean more time cleansing and healing. That means eat less solid food. Instead of French fries, eat mashed potatoes. Soup is a good and filling alternative to many other types of food. The goal here is to eat less fatty foods, and cut down the processing of foods by the body to concentrate more on detoxification.

3. Find something to do. Did you know that obesity is caused by inactivity, and not because of eating? OK, eating too much doesn't count. The point is if you do nothing, your body won't sweat. If it doesn't sweat, it won't detox properly, since sweating is a detox function.

4. Set regular rest periods. You might have a power nap every afternoon at work, so continue the regiment even if you're at home. A scheduled regimen enables your body to prepare in advance for the work it has to do.

5. Take supplements. Spirulina is a good supplement to take because it helps digestion in the stomach and assimilation of nutrients. Honey in the morning helps to boost energy levels, and with many nutrients (hey, it's called the food of gods - no wonder) aids to stabilise your body's intake against its outputs (waste).

There you go - a simple, three-day programme you can stick to and do on a weekly basis. In the old days, people used to drink lime juice and young coconut water (it helps out the liver system and flushes toxins out). We can add things like vitamins and supplements today because they are easily available.

Okay, I'll post later. Oh, and feel free to comment if you have anything useful to add. Ciao.
