Tip of the Day: Diabetes - burn the sugar off!!

My father in-law is a mild diabetic, and many other seniors (and semi-seniors) in my extended family are have diabetes, too. I'm not going to delve into the science of diabetes - that's HERE. Instead, I'm going to recommend a few things I've heard, which seems good to pass along. BTW, this isn't Mom's Tips, she doesn't have diabetes. She does have asthma, though.

OK, top of the list is watch what you eat - this, everybody knows. And to a certain extent, applies to everybody, diabetic or not. It's the calorie count that's dangerous. Did you know that a plate of fried noodles has at least 900 calories? That's one and one-half hours' worth of exercise.

For diabetics, you have to apply the basic techniques of stretching, as well as either aerobic exercise or resistance training. Most older diabetics won't opt for resistance training, and almost everyone I know opt to do brisk walking around their neighbourhood for about an hour or so every other evening.

For the more senior diabetics - 55 and above - be careful when exercising. Muscle and sensory degradation may mean that you won't feel cuts or blisters on your feet, which can get worse. Also, if you haven't eaten according to your regular diet, and feel like going for a stroll, bring water and some candy. Eating less than suggested by your diet can cause your blood sugar level to fall - leading to fainting, light-headed, excessive sweating etc.

And lastly, try exercising at home. Some things you can try:

- Lifting your feet up and down while sitting (good for you couch potatoes)
- Stand up and lift your heels (a few repetitions are good)
- Work your hands and fingers, elbows and wrists.

Okay, there might be a zillion other things that you can recommend that's not written here. As I said, I'm writing from experience. Feel free to post additional tips.

Post later. Ciao.
