Tip of the Day: Ghosts under the Bed
Been to a friend's house yesterday for a sleep over, it's been a long time since we last got some time for girlie (or is it womanly?) talk. I noticed that the guest room we're staying in had mites on the bed - we couldn't sleep peacefully that night. So this is Mom's Tips about Mites (in case you haven't figured that out yet)
1. Be clean as a whistle - going to bed sweating like a pig (like after an outdoor activity, or even cleaning up the house) is like an invitation for these bloodsuckers. The fact that they're nocturnal doesn't mean that they won't bite at any other time. And since we can't see them, it's best to avoid them altogether.
2. Get anti-dust mite sheets and pillowcases - these are proven weapons against dust mites. There's even a mattress protector that's anti - bloodsuckers (sheesh, they sound like vampires now). Just be sure not to bleach the fabric when washing - they're made with special chemicals added to the fabric, and bleaching will remove their 'ability' to protect against mites.
3. Get a tan - once a week (or more frequent, if you're able), dry the mattress and pillows under the hot sun all day. This will surely remove them from the homes they've built inside the mattress. This is not easy to do if you don't live in a tropical country, though.
That should be enough. Oh, there's also a new breed of vacuum cleaner (made specifically with vacuuming mattresses in mind) that can clean mites. You really should pay attention to these, since people with asthma are common these days, and they just can't tolerate mites and dust.
Post later. Ciao.
