Tip of the Day: Since when is Snacking Bad for Your Health?
Snacks are often associated with food that has no nutritional value at all, and most either have too much flavouring or too much colour to give any benefit to your body. Well, that's the problem with modern living, we tend to eat artificial stuff too much. But there's one snack that's been eaten for ages, and it's scientifically proven to be good - sunflower seeds (called 'kuaci' here in Malaysia). Now, there are many types of seeds - such as pumpkin seed and various types of sunflower seeds - but the focus today is on sunflower seeds.
Half a cup of these things supply enoughvitamin E for your daily needs, as well as various minerals and other vitamins as well (such as vitamin B1). It is also a rich source of oil (polyunsaturated fat). The minerals present in it also helps to regulate our muscles and nerves, and selenium is particularly important in helping growth (for children) and regeneration of cells (for adults).
Here, a lot of us Malaysians used to eat this, when watching movies, tv, at the nearby park, even at the regular mamak restaurant. But nowadays, we see less and less young ones picking up this good habit. We need to start promoting natural snacks to our own kids instead of those MSG-laden processed snacks that are plentiful in supermarkets.
